Well we had a better turnout than I even knew about, in my opinion we should have had more turn up but that’s another story, the entrants were Denvir, Ayshegul, Alethia, Hannah, Mitchell, Daniel and eventually Chris turned up,
The event was in a large sports hall, which was kitted out with three official mats, and as it was a BJC event the Gi’s were white only which was nice, you could tell the BJA guys who turned yup as a lot of them had to turn their Gis inside out to hide the advertising and brand names.
I could have a real vent about the standard of the Judo and refereeing at this event but I wont, I will add some snide jibes and remarks as I go along, see if you notice any of them.
On to the serious issue of how our kids did on the day.
Ill start with the first of the day, Big Denvir, Piling on the weight to get up to the U20kg division, he unfortunately had only one other kid in his weight group, he fought well and got caught with a foot sweep for ippon, up to that point it was 50/50, whats nice about when Denvir fights is that he doesn’t try the osoto gari dance with kids which happens so much at that level, they both dance around hopping off balance until one falls on their bum. Denvir attempts throws like seionage etc.
Moving onto Ayshegul, she fought like a Trojan she had a large group of rather more experienced competitors, she made a couple of minor errors and paid for them by being thrown for kokas and then getting trapped in hold downs, which wasn’t too much of a problem for her as she actually got out of all of them bar one, she was being held down and managed to get her legs over her competitors head and push herself up, very flexible, she must have been watching me do that, I regularly bend in half to get out of a hold down, joking aside, Ayshegul performed very well on the day, she has a natural talent which if she continues to train as hard as she can will help her develop into a very good Judo player.
Next up was Alethia ‘Liffy’ The nationals Champion of a couple of months ago, she had a hard group, her first match was over fairly quickly with a throw into a hold down, but it wasn’t going to be easy from then on in, in fact she was thrown in her first match for wazari, which opened her eyes a bit, the match was getting close to time and alethia got a throw in then she used her newaza skills to good effect and held the girl down for an Ippon. She picked up a knee twinge then and started to put her head down, which was obvious to see, it fortunately made her get her aggression out and she then went on to win all of her final matches, not with ease as some of the girls were actually quite good.
Hannah, She had a hard day, she fought a good player in her first fight and couldn’t quite get her throws off, she got went for her seionage, and caught and subsequently held, she then went on to win her next fight, and then was beaten by the others, this was her last competition before becoming senior, so she had the chance to watch some of the senior women compete too, which was interesting to say the least, one of the inevitable grudge matches was a bonus for Hannah. Despite losing the girl she fought will not forget her for some time.
Whilst Hannah was fighting Mitchell was on another mat, now I confess I didn’t get to see much of Mitchells fights, only a glance around as his mum pointed out he was fighting to see him get thrown for Ippon, so its his mums fault for that one, Mitchell is a strane one, he looks quite big when he comes and trains but in competiton its as if he has been wearing lead boot before he weighs in, his opponents looked so much older and bigger than him, he did well though he lost two of his four fights but came out well due to points scoring
Daniel, (the choir boy) this young fella for some reason looks like he is about to break into chorus everytime he is waiting to come out to fight, I wonder if he knows where he is, I would love him to look as if he means business, he hold his hands together in fornt of him and kind of gazes into the clouds, his opponent on the other hand is bouncing around getting ready, to look over at this guy day dreaming, however I digress, Daniel had some big guys to fight too, the moment for me with Daniel was when he threw a guy with his trademark seionage for Ippon, it was interesting that the ref asked his opponent if he knew which one threw who, luckily the guy admitted it was Daniels throw, this ref should have gone to specsavers.
Chris, well he had a great day, I reckon if he is reading this now, he still has a smile on his face, Chris knotched up his first win in a senior competition, he didn’t know he had until he had his opponent securely fastened in a mune gatame, to the ref shouting again, IPPON, then he looked at the ref and thought, well he didn’t throw me, and a few seconds passed and he then realized that he had in fact thrown this guy for ippon instead, he got up still confused, the ref awarded the win to Chris, he bounced like tigger all the way off the mat, he then got thrown in about 4 seconds in the next match by being a donut and basically giving his opponent everything he needed, after that fight he had another which was going 50/50, I then shouted encouragement to go for it, then he got thrown for Ippon again, I shut up immediately and sunk into my chair.
I am really proud of the guys who made it up to Leicester, a better turnout would be nice, even if you don’t compete it is always good to come and support your team mates, and you also get to see what a competition is all about, after writing this I notice I actually left the refs alone,
I want to point out a couple of mistakes which were made, notwithstanding that I am not a referee or would I like to be as it’s a thankless task, but I think if you put yourself in that firing line you should do your best to be good at it,
This competition was run under BJC rules so most of the kids had to take a grip before Hajime, waste of time in my opinion but they did that, but what was happening was one ref allowed a kid to take a same sided grip, left hand and left lapelthis kid them went for an opposite sided throw without control of the other arm or side, so a girl got thrown onto her face, which was pretty bad, but this same girl came out and did this repeatedly, the ref allowed it, and she injured a couple of girls this way, absolutely amazing bad calls, she held the grip for much more than ten seconds on occasions and no attempts to throw, I wish that was all, I really do.
It was nice to see newaza allowed to continue longer than the usually ½ a second too, lots more was allowed on the ground.
So the tally of the day was as follows
Denvir – Silver
Ayshegul – Bronze
Alethia – Gold
Hannah – Bronze
Mitchell – Silver
Daniel – Experience
Chris – his first win
All in all a good day again for Shinto, well done guys you did us proud
