My name is Paul Nogaki. I love Judo and have some knowledge about it that I feel is a privilege in sharing. I'm in sunny California and am glad that this forum exists.

True spirit of Judo is nothing but the gentle and diligent free spirit. Judo rests on flexible action of mind and body. The word flexible however never means weakness but something more like adaptability and open-mindedness. Gentleness always overcomes strength.

Hi Paul

I know modesty stops you from saying as much as you can, but I would love you to say more about your Judo Experience, the little I know of you from your posts, are that you have forgotten more about Judo than most peole know, you have had the opportunity to learn from some of the greats, and trained with Judoka like the great Yamashita, and recently taught and trained many of the Judoka who are hopefuls in the olympics in Beijing.

I know that your superior knowledge comes accross in your posts, but to know more about your pedigree is always interesting, I am obviously not asking you to brag as I know that you wont, but a short Biography would be superb if you wouldnt mind.

This is a difficult ask as I am asking you to almost blow your own trumpet, but only you know the history of your Judo and your experiences.

The points you make about the Oasekomi waza being two planks of wood are priceless, I am sure you have a multitude of them, and the more we get to learn from you and others, the better we can then teach, and adapt our own Judo.

Thanks in advance

Oh Stephan, just for you.

Started Judo at age 8 in California. Moved back and forth from the US and Japan up until high school and typically did Judo 2 to 3 times a week at night duing school but trained every summer break in Japan at a police judo academy 5 days a week 4 to 5 hours a day from the ages 13 to 17. I received my shodan in the US and Japan at the age of 15.

I was on university team iin Japan and during that time in addition to training 5 hours a day, 5 days a week, I went to the Kodokan once a week, mainly to learn from Osawa sensei. Most of the major universities cross trained with others and that's where I got to randori with Yamashita several times and competed with him twice. I think I was his victories # 65 and 82 during his consecutive win streak. I tried to make the 1980 Olympic team for Japan but could never get past Kase and Nose who were the #1 and #2 86 kilo players at that time. Okano sensei is definitely the most influential in my competitive technique and philosphy.

Currently a rokudan. Kata is a passion of mine today although I am working with several elite US Judoka and running our own little local dojo.
